How to grow pygmy Drosera (sundews)

Pygmy sundews are a special group of carnivorous plants native to Australia, characterized by their very small size, numerous tiny and attractive flowers, and the production of reproductive structures (gemmae). Despite their unique traits, they are suitable for beginners. Below is a concise guide How to grow pygmy Drosera (sundews), organized by the conditions they require:

Light conditions: Provide maximum possible lighting. A south-facing window is ideal (monitor plant reactions and, if necessary, provide slight shading), as well as west- or east-facing windows.

Temperature: Maintain standard room temperature throughout the year. They do not undergo dormancy.

Substrate: Use clean fibrous peat mixed with silica sand or perlite in a 2:1 ratio.

Humidity: Pygmy sundews are quite adaptable, thriving in both fresh air and higher humidity levels in terrariums. They do not require misting.

Watering: During growth, the plants should always stand in water. If the plant dries slightly during summer, reduce watering to simulate dry periods similar to their native habitat. Slightly reduce watering in winter as well. Water from below by placing the pot in a shallow tray. An ideal water level is approximately 1 cm.

Fertilizing: During the growing season, the plants can be „fed“ with insects if they cannot catch their own prey. If prey is accessible, the plants will capture it independently. Other forms of fertilizing are unsuitable.

Photographs of pygmy sundews can be viewed in the „My Collection“ section.
