How to grow Pinguicula with uniform leaf rosettes (butterworts)
This is a less common group of Pinguicula, which includes plants with highly varied cultivation needs. For this reason, they are divided into four additional subgroups based on shared requirements. The single identifying characteristic of these plants is that the shape of their leaf rosette does not change throughout the year. Below is a concise guide How to grow Pinguicula with uniform leaf rosettes (butterworts), broken down by the conditions they need.
Butterworts from the southeastern USA
Light conditions: Provide maximum possible lighting throughout the year. During winter, artificial lighting is recommended.
Temperature: Maintain regular room temperature year-round. If artificial lighting is not used during winter, it is advisable to lower the temperature to around 15°C.
Substrate: Use clean fibrous peat mixed with coarse silica sand or perlite in a 1:1 ratio.
Humidity: These plants do not require high humidity levels. They do not need misting.
Watering: The plants should always stand in water. Water from below by placing the pot in a shallow tray. The ideal water level is approximately 1 cm.
Fertilizing: During the growing season, the plants can be „fed“ with insects if they cannot catch their own prey. If prey is available, the plants will capture it on their own.
