How to grow winter-growing Drosera (sundews)
Winter-growing sundews with hibernating buds are the only group of sundews that require cold overwintering. These sundews naturally occur in regions matching our geographical latitudes, allowing most of them to be cultivated outdoors year-round. Below is a concise guide How to grow winter-growing Drosera (sundews), organized by the conditions they need:
Light conditions: Provide maximum possible light. A south-facing window is ideal (monitor plant reactions and, if necessary, provide slight shading), as well as west- or east-facing windows.
Temperature: Maintain normal room temperature. Most species tolerate outdoor conditions during summer well. During winter, reduce the temperature to 5–10°C.
Substrate: Use clean fibrous peat mixed with silica sand or perlite in a 2:1 ratio.
Humidity: Fresh air is suitable for these plants. They do not require misting.
Watering: The plants should always stand in water. Water from below by placing the pot in a shallow tray. An ideal water level is approximately 1 cm. During winter, reduce watering.
Fertilizing: During the growing season, the plants can be „fed“ with insects if they cannot catch their own. If prey is accessible, the plants will capture it independently. Other forms of fertilizing are unsuitable.
